This Vancouver homeowner called upon, of Surrey, B.C., to help them fulfil their wish of converting their existing 7.6- x 13.7-m (25- x 45-ft) kidney-shaped swimming pool into a perimeter overflow design, while at the same time completely updating the current pool surround.
To do this, Aloha removed the upper 0.6 m (2 ft) of the pool and formed the top with a slotted gutter to create the perimeter overflow. Shallow lounge areas between the existing pool and the new geometric edge were also formed. The resulting perimeter sitting ledge allows bathers to relax near the water and/or socialize with those using the pool.
Of course, this was easier said than done as the pool’s existing plumbing system had to be completely removed and replaced, while the pool floor was also raised by pouring new reinforced concrete.
Aloha also added a new aquatic amenity to the homeowner’s backyard consisting of an eight-person, perimeter-overflow spa. Built at one end of the pool, the spa looks as though it had been there all along as it features a similar geometric design. Both the pool and spa were finished in 25- x 25-mm (1- x 1-in.) glass tile, which furthers the co-ordination of the backyard’s aquatic features.

This Toronto project, built by Lido Pools in Richmond Hill, Ont., is a testament to how vinyl-lined swimming pools can approach the appearance of a gunite pool.
To do just this, various features of this 5.8- x 10-m (19- x 33-ft) multiform geometric rectilinear pool were customized, including the skimmer locations, which were raised to the top of the wall panel to allow the water level to rest 12.7 mm (0.5 in.) below the natural-stone coping. In fact, the coping itself was also modified by notching the bullnose so it would overhang and essentially hide the pool’s vinyl-liner track.

Although this homeowner’s backyard in Sydney, N.S., was rather petite, when it came time to maximizing the once unusable space, compromise was not an option.
In constructing this backyard retreat, Olympic Pools & Spas, also in Sydney, created an extension of the family’s indoor space to create an outdoor oasis, complete with a variety of features, without making the backyard feel cramped or appear crowded.
The main element in the backyard is a 4.8- x 9.7-m (16- x 32-ft) vinyl-lined pool, which has a 1-m (3-ft) shallow end that gradually slopes to a 2.4-m (8-ft) deep end. It includes a dual, light emitting diode (LED)-lighting system, salt chlorine generator, heat pump, 1.8-m (6-ft) walk-in step and a diving board.

Last Drop: The Pool Craft Company

The Pool Craft Company Ltd.

By Jason Cramp

The Pool Craft Company Ltd., a full service pool and spa design/build firm in Richmond Hill, Ont., was practically given a blank canvas from which to create this project as the client’s backyard had never been landscaped.

For this homeowner in Aurora, Ont., landscaping the backyard and owning a swimming pool was as much about creating a place for entertaining as it was about satisfying their children’s need for fun. In creating this backyard escape, Pool Craft put just as much emphasis on the swimming pool and its features as it did the surrounding amenities.

In doing so, a 5.5- x 11-m (18- x 36-ft) kidney-shaped pool was installed, featuring two, 2.4-m (8-ft) Roman steps—one in the shallow end and the other in the deep end—and an attached spill-over spa. A diving rock was also integrated into the waterfall feature, opposite the spa, where the kids can spend hours jumping into the pool. To facilitate this, the deep-end step was conveniently located directly beside the waterfall to provide easy access for the next ‘jump.’
