Members of the Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton, Alta., can now enjoy an outdoor swim in a fresh, inviting environment thanks to the recently completed aquatic facility expansion and installation of a retractable glass enclosure. The new facility replaced an outdated outdoor pool, which had limited value for members, as it could only be used a couple of months per year. In its place, two new pools—a lap pool and a shallow, kid-friendly pool—were constructed. Working in conjunction with Clark Builders, the project's architect and general contractor, OpenAire designed, manufactured and installed a 25-m (82-ft) wide, 53.3-m (175-ft) long and 7.3-m (24-ft) high retractable enclosure for the two pools. Although the province's summer season is short, during the long winter months the enclosure will provide guests with a light-filled space and views of the surrounding river valley, allowing them to feel as though they are swimming outdoors. "People want to swim in bright, open environments," says Mark Albertine, OpenAire's president. "Having a retractable pool enclosure is just like swimming outside. When it's closed, you can look up and see the sky and enjoy the views outside, even in the winter."
