Toronto dives in to rescue school pools |
©Image from BigStockPhoto.com The Ontario government will provide capital funding to keep swimming pools open at Toronto schools. The Toronto District School Board has approved a plan to keep 13 of its swimming pools open and give 26 other pools two more months to find funding. The decision follows Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty's announcement that the province will provide capital funding to keep swimming pools open at Toronto schools, spending between $12-15 million per year to keep them in a good state of repair. The provincial government's decision comes on the heels of a report by former Toronto mayor David Crombie, who says since the premier announced his support to keep the schools open, several potential corporate and community sponsors have stepped forward with an offer to support the pools. Despite provincial funding for repairs, the Toronto School Board still needs $4-5 million a year to operate the pools.
