The city of Richmond has now banned smoking within 25 m (82 ft) of public outdoor pools.

Richmond, B.C., is the latest community to adopt strict legislation banning smoking near public outdoor pools.

The ban also prohibits smoking within 25 m (82 ft) of outdoor sports facilities and playgrounds (tennis courts, grass and artificial turf playing fields and running tracks). According to a report in the Richmond Review, the city will spend $25,000 to post 300 signs reminding citizens of the new legislation.

Those who break the law can be issued a ticket by medical health officers, enforcement officers or Richmond RCMP officers, although the city is asking those using the facilities to keep an eye out for smokers to save on enforcement costs.

A similar bylaw was passed earlier this year by Toronto city council, prohibiting smokers within 9 m (29 ft) of Toronto playgrounds, splash pads and wading pools.
