Construction of a multi-use aquatic facility for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England is right on schedule, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), with the venue expected to be completed by 2011. During the Games, the facility will host swimming, diving and synchronized swimming, as well as the aquatic events in the Paralympic Games. The centre will include a 50 x 25-m, 10-lane competition pool, a 50 x 21-m eight-lane training pool and a 21 x 25 x 5-m deep diving pool. All three pools will have movable floors to allow a large number of configurations and different swimming uses, ranging from shallow water for children to various aquatic training programs. The expandable nature of the facility will also permit temporary seating and canopies to accommodate 15,000 spectators for swimming events and 5,000 for diving competitions. Once complete, the centre will boast a 14,000-m2(150,694-sf) wave-shaped roof symbolizing the flow of water in aquatic sports. It will also remain a landmark for London, while providing a permanent world-class swimming and sports facility. During the Olympics, the aquatic facility will accommodate 15,000 spectators.
