A new U.S. website provides valuable pool safety information.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has launched www.poolsafety.gov, an educational website offering information on swimming pool safety and drowning prevention.

Though geared to a U.S. audience, the website provides valuable hints and safety tips for pool owners in any jurisdiction. The new site provides general information for the public, media and swimming pool and spa community, as well as details on the recently passed U.S. Pool and Spa Safety Act.

CPSC's latest data reveals nearly 300 U.S. children younger than five drown in pools and spas each year; roughly 3,000 suffer pool or spa-related injuries requiring attention at hospital emergency rooms.

About two-thirds of the pool and spa-related deaths and injuries involve children aged one to two, with about 80 per cent of the drowning fatalities occurring in residential settings, such as the victim's home, family/friend's house or neighbour's residence.
