A recent study found 68 per cent of public pools, arenas and recreational centres in British Columbia are in need of repair or replacement.

The B.C. Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) has released a new study indicating $5.2 billion is needed over the next decade to upgrade and replace the province's aging indoor pools and other sports facilities.

Entitled A Time for Renewal, the recreation facilities assessment study found 68 per cent of public pools, arenas and recreational centres are 25-years-old or older and unable to keep up with the demands of a growing population.

The study calls for increased funding from all levels of government and suggests costs could be offset if neighbouring communities team up to build and share new facilities. It also recommends municipalities explore partnerships with the private sector and non-governmental organizations.

The $5.2 billion figure only covers the province's indoor swimming pools and skating rinks. The cost for upgrading playing fields, trails and parks has not yet been determined.

The study, the first of its kind in B.C., surveyed 848 indoor recreational facilities.
