Swimming Canada, the national governing body of competitive swimming, welcomed eight-time Beijing gold medallist Michael Phelps to the Canada Cup series, which took place June 18 to 21, 2009 at the Olympic Park Pool in Montreal, Que. Overcoming the negative press he received earlier in the year over his alleged marijuana use, Phelps, 23, is now spending his time training, competing and preparing for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. "The quality of our competitions has allowed us to attract a larger contingency of top international swimmers who know they will have a great environment for fast, competitive swimming," says Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and national coach for Swimming Canada. "It's important to keep hosting world-level, high-calibre competitions in Canada to be successful on the world stage. Having our swimmers race next to athletes such as Michael Phelps will motivate them to go faster and spark the dream of our future generation of Olympic-level swimmers." The Canada Cup is the last meet in a series of three competitions held throughout the year in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto and is designed to provide Canadian athletes with a competitive environment in which they can excel.
