Toronto school pools to soak up the sun

The Toronto District School Board says 10 school rooftops will soon have photovoltaic solar panels.

Several Toronto schools may soon be using solar power to heat their pools, if the Toronto District School Board has its way.

The board already approved installation of roof-mounted photovoltaic solar panels at Hillcrest Community School and William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate, which will be completed by this September, and is anxious to expand the program to 10 additional schools. The board says the space on school rooftops is unused, making it ideal for solar panel installation.

According to the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA), the solar energy collected at Hillcrest alone will create 12,000 kWh of power, which is expected to provide 80 per cent of the school's energy needs (including pool heating) and significantly reduce its dependence on natural gas. Eventually, the board says, schools will be able to generate enough excess power to sell it back to the city for a profit.
