Federal and provincial funds will help Mississauaga make public pools more accessible for the elderly and physically disabled.

Renovations and repairs to six public swimming pools in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga, Ont., are scheduled to start shortly, thanks to grants from the federal Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program and provincial Ontario Recreation Program (Ontario REC).

The $12 million given to the city will help modernize the pools and make them more accessible to the elderly and physically disabled. Work must be completed by March 2011; if it isn't, funding may be lost. As soon as the pools are upgraded, the city will look at replacing the appropriate mechanical and operational systems to ensure the facilities are as energy-efficient as possible.

Both RInC and REC funds were set up to improve local economies through rehabilitation of public recreational facilities, including pools, arenas and playing fields. So far, more than 758 improvement projects across Ontario have received a total of $380 million.
