Strike closes Toronto pools

Water spray areas are just some of the municipal aquatic facilities closed this summer as a result of the Toronto civic workers strike.

With no settlement in sight, a strike by 24,000 indoor and outdoor Toronto civic workers may rob thousands of Torontonians of the joy of cooling off at a city pool or splash pad this summer.

The closing of city-run pools, splash pads, wading pools and beaches has left swimmers of all ages without a place to cool off. Now in its fifth week, the strike also shut down swimming camps and clubs, which resulted in cancelled swimming lessons and has put the future of budding athletes, who now have nowhere to train, at risk.

In addition, high school and university students who depend on summer jobs as lifeguards at city pools, have had to find other work since the strike began in June.

The interruption in services has also closed city-run fitness and community centres, arenas, golf courses, greenhouses and conservatories.
