Huge crowds came to Charlottetown to cheer on some of Canada's top swimming and diving athletes at the 2009 Canada Summer Games, which took place August 15 to 29. Events were held in a total of 18 sports. Ontario performed particularly well in the water-based competitions, taking home 24 gold medals in the diving platform, diving springboard, butterfly, butterfly freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, individual medley and freestyle events. One of the largest multi-sport competitions in the world, the games attracted more than 4,400 athletes, coaches and managers, along with 6,000 volunteers who helped the competitions run smoothly. During the first week, events took place in Summerside, P.E.I., on the western side of the province, while the second week's events were held in Charlottetown. "These 2009 Canada Summer Games have demonstrated to all Canadians the tremendous energy, ability and opportunities we have here on Prince Edward Island," said Carolyn Bertram, P.E.I. Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour. "The legacy of this event will live on in new and improved facilities, enhanced volunteer resources and the financial benefits resulting from thousands of participants and visitors who visited our province." The next Canada Summer Games will take place in 2013 in Sherbrooke, Que.
