A new ASME addendum changes the way hot tub suction fittings are tested.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has unanimously approved a new addendum to its ASME/ANSI 19.8 standard, allowing suction fittings used in self-contained hot tubs to be tested in pairs, with regard to hair entrapment.

The addition, which was proposed by an Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP) task force, will allow the dual-outlet fittings to obtain a higher flow rating and be used in hot tubs with higher water velocity.

The proposal came after manufacturers discovered smaller fittings typically used in hot tubs garnered lower flow ratings under the new ASME 19.8 standard recognized in the U.S. Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA), forcing reduced water flows and installation of additional outlets.
