Calgary approves principles for pesticide bylaw

While it will ban 'weed-and-feed' products, Calgary's pending pesticide bylaw will likely allow for spot application of the chemicals in private yards.

A Calgary city council committee has put principles in place for a new pesticide bylaw that would ban the use of 'weed-and-feed' products.

The move comes after a series of open houses, held last month, to consult with residents about reduced pesticide use on private and public lands. According to a report in Fast Forward Weekly, the bylaw will likely allow for spot application of weed-and-feed chemicals in private yards, despite calls by anti-pesticide activists for a stronger ban.

The principles will go to council for approval next month; city officials will then draft the bylaw and send it to committee in December. The province-wide sales ban is slated to take effect in January.

Calgary is the largest municipality in Canada without pesticide regulations in place. More than 130 Canadian municipalities have passed similar bylaws since September 2008.
