Toronto District School Board (TDSB) trustees have voted to reopen the nine remaining school swimming pools that were closed due to lack of permit revenue.

The fate of nine Toronto District School Board (TDSB) swimming pools was decided last week, with trustees voting to reopen the aquatic facilities.

Although these pools failed to earn sufficient permit revenue in 2009, a recent 33-page report, A Solution for TDSB Pools, by the board's Aquatics Working Group (AWG), showed the nine pools had secured sufficient permit revenue to fully cover operating costs from January to June 2010.

In 2008, TDSB voted to close all school pools if funding could not be secured to cover operating expenses. The announcement prompted significant community outreach along with an increasing number of new permit applications and associated new permit revenue.

According to the AWG report, revenue has more than doubled at the 32 remaining pools, which were on the verge of being closed, with an estimated value of more than $1 million in 2009-2010.

The swimming pools at the following schools are to be reopened: Carleton Village St. Public School, Earl Grey Sr. Public School, George Harvey Collegiate Institute, Kensington Community Jr. School, Monarch Park Collegiate Institute, Western Technical Commercial School and Winona/McMurrich Jr. Public School.
