Funds from the Government of Canada's Own the Podium program comprise 43 per cent of Swimming Canada's overall budget.

Swimming Canada, the country's national governing body of competitive swimming, is applauding the Government of Canada for its renewed financial support to the Own the Podium (OTP) program in the wake of the 2010 Olympic Games. A total of $36 million a year will be invested in athletes preparing for the 2012 Summer Games.

OTP funding contributes 43 per cent of Swimming Canada's overall budget and is geared towards high-performance initiatives for Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

"(The) funding has allowed us to build a strong support system for our athletes in their quest for podium finishes at the international level," says Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and national coach for Swimming Canada. "What we have learned from the 2010 Olympics is that investing in our sport system does produce great results."

The OTP program was established in 2005 to provide additional resources and high-performance programming to Canadian athletes, coaches and support personnel.
