The Chancellor Community Centre in Vaughan, Ont., was recently recognized with a provincewide 'Best in Class' award from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) for its energy-efficient indoor pool. The centre ranked first in Ontario in the indoor pool group. The Local Authority Services (LAS) Municipal Energy Performance Benchmarking Project comprised 12 categories and involved more than 140 municipalities and 393 facilities. "Members of council and city staff are concerned about our environment and work hard to protect it," said Mayor Linda Jackson. "This award helps to recognize that Vaughan residents have access to some of the most modern, environmentally friendly recreation facilities." Over the last 18 months, LAS and the participating municipalities worked on the project with a consortium led by Marbek Consultants. The program is designed to help municipalities improve energy efficiency by comparing whole-building energy use to average and best-in-class benchmarks for similar facility types under similar operating conditions. The results illustrate how well a facility is performing relative to its peers.
