The City of Toronto opened several of its outdoor swimming pools early this spring due to the hot and humid weather.

In response to an early heat wave experienced this spring, the City of Toronto has opened several of its outdoor pools ahead of schedule.

On June 12, six outdoor pools in Scarborough and North York started early swim schedules, while an additional six outdoor pools in Etobicoke-York and Toronto-East York opened on June 17.

"Being responsive to the needs of residents is a priority for the City of Toronto," said Mayor David Miller. "Opening pools early allows us to provide opportunities for residents to escape the heat and to get the most enjoyment possible out of these seasonal recreation assets."

Early opening dates and pool locations were determined based on employee availability, completion of staff training and ability to get the pools open and ready for use from a technical and operational perspective.

This Saturday, the city's 47 remaining outdoor pools will open, along with more than 100 wading pools. These facilities, along with the city's 72 splash pads, will remain open until September.
