©Bigstockphoto.com Toronto's Sunnyside-Gus Ryder pool reopened on Monday after the city's parks and recreation department came up with a plan to heat the pool. After city officials announced the Sunnyside-Gus Ryder public pool in Toronto would be closed for the summer in mid-July, the pool reopened on Monday. According to a report in the Toronto Star, in an effort to salvage what is left of the season, the city has devised a plan that will allow the pool to be opened for two weeks, as well as the two weekends in September after Labour Day. Brenda Patterson, general manager of parks, forestry and recreation, told The Star her department pushed for a better outcome and came up with a heating plan, which mainly relies on heat from the sun and a small propane heater. "When the pool was filled a few days ago, the temperature was about 17 C (63 F) and it is hoped the propane heater will get the water temperature up to 21 C (70 F) or higher, depending on the weather," she said. The pool was originally undergoing a $2-million renovation, which started last fall and included replacing the filtration system and repairing the shell. It was scheduled to reopen in August; however, a heavy rain fall in late June caused flooding in various areas, which damaged equipment and set the project back several weeks, leaving the city's parks and recreation department with no choice but to announce its closure.
