Preliminary statistics for residential pool building permits issued by Statistics Canada indicate a decrease of over six per cent in 2008 compared to 2007. Although final statistics will not be released until March 5, and do not include all areas where a pool permit is not required, these early figures indicate an overall decrease in the inground market last year.

Reasons for the decrease in pool building permits include consumer concerns over the slumping economy and the job market, which encouraged homeowners to hold on to their discretionary income. The cool wet weather in most parts of the country last spring and summer also hurt the demand for pools.

In terms of major metropolitan areas, Montréal had a slight increase in building permits in 2008, while Toronto saw a substantial decrease and Vancouver was on a par with 2007.
