Tropical Pools & Spas owner, Joe Cardwell, 66 |

Joe Cardwell, owner of Tropical Pools & Spas in Hamilton, Ont., passed away on February 8. He was 66. Cardwell had been involved in the pool and spa industry for 42 years, starting in the pool business as a salesman for Pioneer Pools, followed by a partnership with Hugh Hand and Bryce Banting to form Hand Pools, selling inground and above-ground pools in the Hamilton area. He continued his business relationship with Banting and went on to form Palm Pools until they parted ways in the early 1990s. It was at this time Cardwell created Tropical Pools & Spas, continuing with his true calling of being a salesman until his recent retirement. "Never being a small man, Joe had in his later years got to be quite sizeable and we had a poster of him in our place with the title, 'The biggest pool dealer in Ontario,' says Steve Gyetvai of Latham International, who knew him both personally and professionally. "Joe loved the poster and we loved him and his capacity to laugh and enjoy life. He was a great personality in the industry and will be greatly missed by all."
