The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has announced 39 of its pools, which are in various states of disrepair, may close this June unless more money is available for repairs and operation costs.

Facing a $26-million deficit, the TDSB created the Aquatics Working Group (AWG) to come up with a rescue plan for these deteriorating pools.

As part of its efforts to find a solution, the Toronto Lands Corporation (TLC) and AWG released a report titled, 'Long-Term Strategy For 39 Pools in the Toronto District School Board.'

Among its recommendations, the report included the following cost-cutting measures:
• Closing pools that are too expensive to repair;
• Increasing energy efficiencies through the use of solar pool heating systems; and
• Reducing labour costs by installing automated systems for chemical balancing.

The complete report can be found at www.torontosportscouncil.com.
