| 'Staycation' trend continues in Quebec |
This past winter saw much less snow, resulting in less damage to above-ground pools. Photo courtesy Trevi The consensus among pool and spa dealers in Quebec is the 2009 season will be successful. The cocooning trend will continue, with consumers preferring to spend money on their home and backyard rather than taking a vacation, say dealers. Reinforcing the decision to stay at home is the declining value of the Canadian dollar, which has made holiday travel to the U.S. more expensive, even with lower gas prices. Despite these favourable signs, sales of above-ground pools are not expected to reach the levels seen in 2008, when 18,200 units were sold. Many of these units were replacement sales after heavy snowfall and ice damaged an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 pools. This past winter saw much less snow, resulting in less damage. Also affecting above-ground sales this year could be higher prices. Consumers may end up paying as much as 20 per cent more for a pool than last year thanks to the increased cost of steel and resin and a higher U.S. exchange rate on imports. So far this year, dealers are reporting those who have purchased an above-ground pool have been more affluent and less likely to finance their purchase. Many dealers are expecting inground pool sales to be about the same as in 2008, when 4,475 units were sold, although many will be high-end models with more accessories, as Quebec consumers begin to invest in their backyard environment. Spas and hot tubs are selling well, with sales expected to increase by 15 per cent or more over last year, say dealers, thanks to aggressive marketing and the availability of more affordable models. Weather plays a major role in the overall success of a pool season, so if this summer is sunny and hot, it could be a great year, especially with tax rebates from the federal government encouraging consumers to invest in their home.
