Beechwood Landscape Architecture and Construction in Southampton, NJ, earned a gold award from the Northeast Spa and Pool Association (NESPA) for a backyard project that was three years in the making.
The Beechwood team, led by Steve Chepurny, a registered New Jersey landscape architect, delivered their client the waterfront living space they wanted to achieve.
The private residence, located in Avalon, NJ, sits on two lots overlooking the bay and intercostal waterway. Beechwood worked closely with the builder, architects, and interior designer to develop a space that would complement the client’s love of outdoor living and entertaining. The challenge was to design a home that met all regulations set forth by the town, state, and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) following Hurricane Sandy.
The resulting project was a custom gunite pool accompanied by an expansive spa in the rear yard. Limited by space, the fire feature was integrated into the design of the pool.
“To unite the pool with the ground floor, it extends under the house with the columns of the house integrated into the pool,” explained Chepurny.
Long benches were also introduced in this area to allow for a retreat from the sun while enjoying the views of the bay. An ocean blue travertine was used for the pool deck, inclusive of travertine bullnose coping.
“Integrating the stone from the house onto the spa, pool columns, and seat wall unified the space through use of the materials. Landscaping was introduced along the perimeter for privacy, colour, and texture,” said Chepurny. “The property comes to life at night with a custom designed low-voltage lighting system that can change to a variety of different colours.”
