The City of Vancouver plans to close the Vancouver Aquatic Centre on June 28, marking the end of operations for the facility as a $175 million renewal project moves ahead.

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation say the centre has reached the end of its functional lifespan. The closure will clear the way for site preparation ahead of demolition work. Officials plan a new aquatic facility for later this year. The city has not provided a timeline for the project’s completion.

The aquatic centre, which opened in 1974, serves swimmers, fitness users, aquatic clubs, and community groups from across the region. The current complex includes a 50 m (164 ft) pool, a diving tank, a sauna, a whirlpool, and fitness facilities. The renewed aquatic centre will halve the pool length.

Park Board staff say they are reviewing capacity across the city’s aquatic network to help maintain programs and services affected by the shutdown. Staff will redirect existing users to other facilities during the construction period.

The renewal project received funding through the City’s 2023–2026 Capital Plan and follows Park Board approval of the redevelopment program in 2025.

The planned closure comes amid opposition from civic groups. On June 23, the B.C. Supreme Court denied an interim injunction to stop the facility from closing. The court was hearing a petition by the Protecting Our Vancouver Aquatic Centre Society, which argues that the City and Park Board abandoned a voter-endorsed plan to renew an Olympic-sized pool.
