Kitchener is turning to stainless steel for its newest public pools, betting on a design that reduces water, energy, and chemical use over time.

As reported by CBC.com, the two pools at the new Cowan Recreation Centre in RBJ Schlegel Park will mark a different approach to aquatic facility construction in the region.

Alex Geisel, aquatics supervisor for the City of Kitchener, said stainless steel pools are still relatively new in the area. The design can help reduce water, energy, and chemical use compared with traditional pools, he told CBC.

Geisel explained that stainless steel is emerging as a popular choice for aquatic facilities, offering durability, easier maintenance, and long-term operational efficiencies.

The new facility will include an eight-lane, 25-metre pool and a separate program pool. Both pools are expected to open to the public later this year when the recreation centre opens.

The $174-million Cowan Recreation Centre is one of Kitchener’s largest recreation investments. The city is funding the project through development charges and government grants, including contributions from the federal and provincial governments.

The new pools will help meet growing demand for aquatic programming. Geisel said Kitchener’s eight existing outdoor pools operate at about 120 per cent capacity during the summer. The two new pools are expected to add about 48,000 swimming lessons in their first year.
