Fundraising to save beloved B.C. aquatic centre gains steam

A community-led campaign is challenging plans to downsize Vancouver’s last 50-m (164-ft) Olympic pool, with fundraising already topping $23,000 to support a judicial review.
In 2022, a plebiscite committed $103 million to renew the city’s Olympic-sized lap and diving pool, but that plan was later revised to replace it with a 25-m (82-ft) facility and added leisure features. Concerned residents argue the change undermines the original vote and are raising funds to hold the city accountable.
The pool is part of a major reconstruction of the aquatic centre, slated to begin in 2026. The new build would eliminate the last 50-m (164-ft) pool in the city, halving its size at a time of growing demand.
Built in 1974 as a public recreation facility in Vancouver’s West End, the centre is expected to undergo redevelopment through 2029, with costs now projected at $175 million.
