No two days are alike in the pool and spa industry. In the Day in the Life series, we go behind the scenes with the people who keep projects moving.

This week, we feature Kevin Whittle, landscape manager with CCS Pool & Landscape in Barrie, Ont.

Kevin serves as the link between homeowners and crews. He helps clients select materials and make design choices. In the field, where he spends most of his time, he works with crews on layout, elevations, and installation details. In the office, he co-ordinates with suppliers and schedules upcoming work.

Flexibility is what drives his day. Weather shifts and delivery delays can quickly change plans. When materials arrive late or site conditions shift, Kevin adjusts work orders to keep crews productive.

Even well-planned projects need constant adjustments. Grade changes, access issues, and multiple crews working in the same space all require attention. Kevin focuses on keeping work on track without losing time.

While Kevin often works with heavy machinery such as trucks, skid steers, and excavators, the tool that has proven most important is his phone. It connects him with crews, suppliers, and homeowners. He uses it to track deliveries, review plans, and manage communication in real time.

Managing expectations

Kevin also helps manage expectations when homeowners request changes mid-project. From added features to material swaps, he explains what is possible and what’s best for the overall design.

Despite the challenges, the payoff comes at the end of each job. When a backyard is complete and the client is happy, it makes all the effort worthwhile for Kevin and his crew. A finished backyard or pool installation often transforms the entire property.

Technology has changed Kevin’s day-to-day over the past few years. CCS Pool & Landscape uses a customer relationship management (CRM) system to organize schedules and track projects. Kevin says it improves communication, makes documentation easier, and reduces errors.

If he could give his younger self some advice, Kevin says it would be to document everything as it happens. Real-time notes and updates make co-ordination easier. He also adds a practical tip: always dress for the weather on construction sites.
