Day in the life: Lorrie Jonat, Sun Valley Pools and Spas

No two days are the same in the pool and spa industry, and for Lorrie Jonat, owner of Sun Valley Pools and Spas, based in Duncan, B.C., that variety is part of the job. In this edition of our Day in the Life series, we step into the routine of a technician balancing hands-on service with the realities of a busy schedule.
Jonat’s week is largely focused on valet service and general maintenance, with spas taking priority and pools close behind. The workday begins at 9 a.m. at the shop, where the first task is reviewing work orders and prepping the service van for the day ahead.
By mid-morning, Lorrie is already cleaning and servicing spas and pools. Much of the day revolves around water balancing, troubleshooting equipment, and keeping systems running smoothly.
Of course, not everything goes as planned. Jobs can take unexpected turns, and emergencies often require quick pivots. When that happens, schedules are adjusted through the office to keep everything moving. Even the occasional unusual call—like finding a rat in the water—comes with the territory.
Communication is key early in the day, with regular check-ins with the service manager or lead technician. By the end of the day, Jonat wraps up by completing worksheets and documenting the day’s work.
What stands out most is the pace of her job. Compared to five years ago, the job is simply busier. The advice she would give to someone starting out: follow the steps, stay consistent, and trust the process.
