A major renewal project at Pan Am Pool in Winnipeg is set to begin in January 2027, with the historic aquatic facility expected to remain closed for about 16 months.

Built for the Pan American Games, the pool opened on July 21, 1967. It has since become a Winnipeg landmark and a key facility for residents, competitive swimmers, divers, and visiting athletes. It is the only pool in Winnipeg that can accommodate competitive swimming and diving.

The facility includes an Olympic-size main pool, a training tank, and a kiddie pool. Its diving tower has four platforms ranging from three to 10 m (9.9 to 32.8 ft), along with two springboards.

The $7 million renewal project will address concrete deterioration and update key components of the main pool. Work will include concrete repairs to the main pool tank, deck, and dive towers. Crews will also replace the waterproof membrane in the main tank and surrounding area and install new tile.

The project will include additional upgrades to meet current regulations and standards.

The city will close the facility to the public during construction. Aquatic sport groups will have limited, controlled access to the training tank and specialized dryland diving equipment during the closure.

“Maintenance and renewal work are a normal and necessary part of caring for facilities of this age,” says Sandra Sawatzky, manager of the Community Services Department’s Asset Management Office. “By doing this work now, we’re helping to avoid larger issues down the road.”

The project is part of the Recreation and Library Facility Investment Strategy, funded by the Government of Manitoba.

The city issued the construction tender on August 19, 2026. It closes on September 22.
